Foundation
Established in April 2004, The Eigenbase Project is a California
nonprofit public benefit corporation; its mission is to support the
design, development, standardization, and promotion of high-quality
open source software for data management. Its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
public charity status has been approved by the IRS, so donations to
the project are tax-deductible. All software contributed to the
project is made available to the general public under
OSI-approved licensing.
Eigenbase encourages high-quality contributions, both from volunteers
in the open source community and from the software industry.
The project's nonprofit incorporation provides a number of benefits:
- The goals and existence of the project are kept independent from the
diverse activities, aims, and lifetimes of its participants.
- The project cannot be co-opted for the non-public benefit of
individuals.
- Intellectual property rights are well-defined for all software
contributed.
- Participants are protected by limited liability laws.
